Labels, we love them & we hate them. Some people take them very seriously while others couldn’t care less what you call them… and labels are what we’re delving into today here at The Aussie Witch. I’m going to attempt to explain the difference between witchcraft, wicca & paganism (although I’m sure someone will disagree with me!). These three categories are so closely tied and often can intertwine with one another meaning that it can, and will probably, get confusing.
Long story short, Wicca is a pagan religion that also incorporate witchcraft… but also doesn’t have to incorporate witchcraft. A pagan doesn’t have to be a wiccan and may also not practice witchcraft… but also might. Last but not least, someone may practice witchcraft but hold absolutely no paganist beliefs (I know, confusing!)
You could view paganism as an encompassing umbrella term for many non-Abrahamic religions. It typically involves a polytheistic pantheon of Gods/Goddesses and many pagans base their worship around nature and the Earth, while some even use witchcraft in their belief system.
There are MANY subsects of paganism and here are just a few:
- … and many, many more!!
Wicca is a modern earth-centered religion created by Gerald Gardner in the 1940s after he was allegedly initiated into a hidden coven that was still practicing the ancient traditions associated with Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Wicca is ditheistic, meaning it believes in two deities the God and Goddess and as such falls under the pagan umbrella. It has structure and rituals and often Wiccan’s also practice witchcraft as part of their worship.
Just like paganism it has so many subsects, meaning there is probably something for everyone. Just to name a few:
- … and many, many more!
Witchcraft could be defined as a practice, a way to focus energies to cause change. It’s not a religion and a witch can be completely atheist or practice their craft separately and not have it as part of their religious beliefs… and you guessed, just like the two afformentioned labels witchcraft has MANY offshoots!
- Kitchen witches
- Green witches
- Eclectic witches
- Hereditary witches
- … and many, many more!
So… what in the world are you?
Honestly, that’s up to you! Pick something that resonates and run with it, study it, get to know it. If it doesn’t fit move on and try something else. That’s the beauty of this path, it is completely up to you as an individual. Your path is just that, your path! You could cast spells while worshipping a bright green frog with purple polka dots named Bob if that’s what tickles your fancy. What I’m trying to get at here is that at the end of the day the label doesn’t matter. This path is all about intention and personal choice. You do you!
